obstruction. Because ofthe irregular rhythm, the redundant (and unresected) anterior mitral valve leaflet may be in a more open position at the time of ventricular systole, predisposingto an enhanced Venturi effect and hence greater obstruction. Since drug therapy, heart rate, blood pressure, body position (at the time of echocardiogram), and volume status were similar at the time of both studies, it is unlikely that these mechanisms can be invoked as the source of our observations.

Chronic pneumonia caused by Rhodococcus equi in a patient without impaired immunity.
A 48 year old, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-negative, immunocompetent male patient had a chronic progressive pulmonary infiltrate, without radiological cavitation, in the middle lobe of the right lung produced by Rhodococcus equi. He reported direct contact with a diseased dog. The patient was diagnosed by thoracotomy and treated by lobectomy. After 16 months of follow-up, the patient was...
متن کاملNon-pulmonary Rhodococcus equi infections in patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).
Rhodococcus equi, formerly known as Corynebacterium equi, was isolated repeatedly from the blood of two patients with the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Neither of the patients had pneumonia while they were bacteraemic, whereas pneumonia has been present in all previously reported cases of human infection with R equi. One of our patients had diarrhoea and the organism was isolated ...
متن کاملPulmonary malacoplakia and Rhodococcus equi infection in a patient with AIDS.
We describe a case of pulmonary malacoplakia and Rhodococcus equi cavitary pneumonia in a patient with AIDS. The relationship between Rhodococcus equi, a rare bacterial human pathogen, and malacoplakia, an unusual type of chronic granulomatous inflammation, is discussed.
متن کاملSevere cavitary pneumonia caused by a non-equi Rhodococcus species in an immunocompetent patient.
Rhodococcus equi is a Gram-positive coccobacillus that can cause a variety of infections in humans, most commonly severe pneumonia.1-4 These infections typically occur in immunocompromised hosts, although, rarely, immunocompetent hosts may be affected as well.1-4 Nonequi Rhodococcus species have been implicated in human disease, albeit less commonly than R equi. We report a case of severe cavit...
متن کامل[Necrotizing pneumonia due to Rhodococcus equi in non HIV immunocompromised host. Case report and review].
Rhodococcus equi, is a grampositive intracellular bacillus, that causes infection mainly in immunocompromised hosts. We report the case of a 52 years old woman, with a systemic lupus erythematosus and a progressive 10 months evolution with cough, dyspnea, mucous-purulent sputum, occasionally hemoptysis, intermittent fever, and weight loss of 10%. With partial response to antibiotic treatment, r...
